We have reached the final stage of our journey into board game crowdfunding on Kickstarter: the closing phase, where urgency becomes a psychological lever and every action, whether a post, an update, or a new piece of content, can make the difference between success and failure.

According to Robert Cialdini’s theory of scarcity (1984), people are more likely to act quickly when they perceive an imminent deadline. In crowdfunding campaigns, this translates into the so-called positive deadline effect: as the end approaches, the “diffusion of responsibility” decreases and each user feels that their individual contribution truly matters.

Kickstarter itself leverages this mechanism: 48 hours before a campaign ends, the platform sends a reminder to interested users, triggering a final push toward action. Data from BackerKit on Algomancy, Botany, and Shasn confirm this pattern: in all three cases, the backer curves accelerate in the final days, driven by targeted updates and content:

Final-stage urgency is therefore not just a matter of time, but a social and emotional lever, capable of turning deadline pressure into a wave of shared participation. It is within this short yet intense window that the most skilled creators manage to convert tension into narrative momentum, fuelling enthusiasm, word of mouth, and mutual trust.

The Final Sprint: How Algomancy, Botany, and Shasn Successfully Closed Their Kickstarter Campaigns

Algomancy

For Algomancy, the final peak period was marked by the release of new YouTube video reviews and content reshared by Caleb Gannon across his social channels. These videos – short, clear, and ironic – helped reignite audience attention during the crucial closing days.

An important role may also have been played by the Room and Board channel, which on September 4, 2023 published an accessible and humorous review that surpassed 1,000 views. The creator, an expert in competitive card games, praised Algomancy for its original draft mechanics and strong value for money, contributing to a final organic visibility boost.

Botany

Starting on May 18, 2023, the Botany team intensified its activity on Instagram, sharing almost daily content until the campaign’s end. Visual updates, component details, and final countdown posts culminated on May 31 with a livestream, followed by three closing posts the next day.

At the same time, communication on Kickstarter revolved around two key moments:

  • The May 23 post, “7 Days Left to Get Your Free Botany: Orchid Obsession”, which introduced a free expansion for backers who pledged before the deadline.
  • The updates on May 26 and May 30, which kept the perception of progress and novelty high by revealing the latest stretch-goal developments.

The combined effect of consistent content, exclusive bonuses, and urgency marketing levers created a powerful Fear Of Missing Out (FOMO) effect. Between May 24 and 25, the number of backers jumped from around 230 to over 600, setting the stage for the final rush that led Botany to surpass 15,000 backers.

Shasn

From August 11 until the campaign’s close, Shasn experienced a strong resurgence in backers, particularly during the final three days, thanks to a perfectly orchestrated engagement strategy.

On Kickstarter, the team released several updates focused on stretch goals, designed to encourage collective participation and strengthen the campaign’s narrative.

The so-called “Elite” expansions, which introduced new characters and powers, acted as true narrative stretch goals: each milestone unlocked new cards and exclusive content, turning campaign progress into a shared gameplay experience.

This formula, where community, storytelling, and financial results intertwine, kept tension alive until the very last day, enabling the project to raise $339,045 from 4,209 backers.

As a result, Shasn became the largest Kickstarter project ever launched in India, with a community that still counts over 7,000 active members on WhatsApp today. (source)

Final Thoughts

Every successful Kickstarter campaign focuses on marketing strategies, language, and community building. Yet, when observing Algomancy, Botany, and Shasn, a common principle clearly emerges: success is never improvised, it is built over time.

From pre-launch preparation to the final rush, this series of articles has shown that campaign progression follows a clear formula: preparation, consistency, acceleration.

  • Preparation (add link to the second published post) lays the foundation by building trust and curiosity.
  • Consistency (add link to the third published post) during the launch phase sustains visibility and fuels engagement.
  • Final acceleration leverages emotion and urgency to convert interest into action.

Each of the three campaigns interpreted this formula differently, combining its elements in unique ways. Yet all of them demonstrate the same truth: a winning campaign is never a stroke of luck, it’s a matter of method, rhythm, and storytelling.
